It isn’t cynical to speak your truth to the best of your ability. That’s something I didn’t learn until I was almost fifty years old. I feared for a long time that my writing would offend everybody, then finally decided it didn’t matter if it did or not. My truth is my truth. The same holds for you and for everyone else. The reality is, I’ve never been popular with folks, even during—perhaps especially during—the long, awful years when I worked hard at people-pleasing and trying to be inoffensive and “well-rounded.”
